Rita Charon

Rita Charon graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1978.  She began teaching at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1982 and was appointed full professor in 2001. After perceiving a need for humanistic cross-training for medical professionals, Charon obtained a Ph.D. in English in 1999 and founded the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia in 2000.  She currently teaches narrative ethics in their medical school for the Narrative Medicine Master’s degree program.
